1.8t VVT half moon replacement

Post by Dirty Harry »

I have done a bit of research and it seems I am losing quite a bit of oil from this half moon thing.

Part of the research revealed that I need a special tool(other than myself) to keep the tensioner in place?

Could someone shed some light on this please? I am able to do the job, but not having all the tools makes it a little challenging.

Thank you dankie

This is the tool you need to compress the tensioner:

Ya I know, but paying that much for a once off use is kinda ridiculous.

Under the vvt valve at the back of the inlet camshaft.

I've done one without the special tool.

Work carefully with the valve and you will be fine.

Oh yes there is one there as well. The tool isn't expensive. Just getting it done without upsetting the timing is

True that. The tensioner is a b*tch without the tool to hold it closed. Would have made my life lots better if I had had one.

I bought the JTC cam locking tool for TFSI and it came with the 1.8t tensioner tool included for R1050.00. Took it as a bargain

Basically just a long bolt with a bracket arm to depress the tensioner.

What's the point of the tool? What will happen if I don't use it?

I know when getting a new tensioner, it is kept in place with a pin, surely I can do the same thing? push it down and lock it in place with that pin?

The tensioner is double sided. The tool compresses both of them together to give the chain enough slack to remove the vvt or the cams if need be. You can do it without but it involves a lot of swearing and frustration and please make sure you dont misalign the cams.

Harry you're thinking of the hydraulic cam tensioner that comes with a pin. There's no locking pin on the cam chain tensioner. The seal that needs to be replaced is the VVT oil seal, but while you do that, perhaps try do the exhaust cam seal, that's also a common leakage point, but involves removing the exhaust cam.

I'll have a look at that seal. I don't really want to remove any cams. I always get worried I stuff it up and the my timing is out. Eventhough I have done it a few times. I'll have to assess it but needs to be done next weekend. Losing like .5l of oil a week and there is no other leak. I can see fresh oil dripping down from that half moon.

Not sure if you have come across this yet, but this is a very good guide to replacing that VVT gasket and half moon. You don't need to remove the cams if you're just changing the VVT gasket, but if you want to change the half moons, then you do. As long as it's all marked, it should be fine, also you don't need to remove the chain from the cam sprockets.

So, managed to get it done, eventually. Could actually be a quick job. Seems to be ok so far, didn't have to remove the cams which saves alot of time.
