Turbo Rebuild - K03s
Hi guys,
So after seeing so many TDI turbo's fail after being re-conned even by reputable places in JHB, My question is this...
Is it safe to recon a Brog Warner K03s?
Will it last or will it also fail?
a raise of hands who has re-conned a K03s and its working without issues?
No my turbo isnt failing and didnt go boom...Im just wondering that if i had to buy a spare second hand K03s from someone and took it in to have completely reconditioned/rebuilt, will it last and be like new?
I know it has everything to do with the type of seals, bushes and bearings etc they use in the rebuild as well as balancing. Just dont want to have it done and the turbo wont last in anycase?
Thanks

Re: Turbo Rebuild - K03s
Your car will more than likely fall apart before that k03S turbo fails.

Yeah i havent seen many K03's fail, but was just thinking.dazza wrote:Your car will more than likely fall apart before that k03S turbo fails.
If you had to have one rebuilt, will you have the same result as the TDI turbos that fail after like 200km, or will the turbo actually last due to it being completely different and a petrol turbo

Re: Turbo Rebuild - K03s
Variable Geometry TDi turbos and normal journal bearing turbos are chalk and cheese...
EDIT to add: from what i gather the factors you mentioned in you in intial post are the deciding factors... you can repair normal journal bearing turbos sucessfully so i dont see why the k03 would be different

If you are going to keep a turbo spare, rather get yourself a gt3071

Re: Turbo Rebuild - K03s
I think the main reason that most of the turbos fail and this is what I have heard...
is that once the turbo has been replaced a lot of people don't clean out the Oil and water lines before re-installing..

turbos can be overhauled successfully and last same as a new one,Stompie wrote:Hi guys,

No my turbo isn't failing and didn't go boom...I'm just wondering that if i had to buy a spare second hand K03s from someone and took it in to have completely reconditioned/rebuilt, will it last and be like new?
I know it has everything to do with the type of seals, bushes and bearings etc they use in the rebuild as well as balancing. Just don't want to have it done and the turbo wont last in any case?
Thanks
just a curious question, lets make it a poll
how many petrol and diesel turbo`s failed are on stock standard cars any how many that failed are on tuned cars with mapped ecu`s?

seems not many to replies on this above, yes you do get turbo failures on standard cars, but not so many as on tuned cars, incorrect statement?
if you got a mapped ecu on your car, just go and check the boost settings against the oem boost setting and then decide why did your turbo failed in the first case, as oem turbo are not fabricated to do that more boost levels, now do we have to blame the rebuild turbo or the software tuned maps
