It would be interesting to see who has the highest mileage on the G5 GTI and what has the maintenance been like.
Maintenance wise be side normal servise replacement parts since:
- HPFP Sensor @ R680 (Goldwagen)
- RevH DV @ R970 (VW)
- Coils @ R3120 (VW)
-Tensioner PULLEY @ R350 (Goldwagen)
- PCV @ R430 (Goldwagen)

That's about it,..G5 has no problems and has been faithfull @ 230000km. She is going nowhere and gonna driver her till she can no more of which I think will never happen. These cars are STRONG
yours is manual nuh.... i can see the faith you have lol

It seems that all these cars are the same.

1 last question. Solo 786 says the noise is because the gear teeth wear and chain gets clatter, so will these parts survive till 300 000km? (if I choose to keep the car so long)
on these cars preventative maintanance prevents many tears... if you by the means to do it, then do it... im planning to but not by the means

I am also not planning to sell anytime soon even with my milage @ 230000km.
I see no need to and have looked at other later model GTi's but just does not faze me. I would love to have a ED35 or 6.:R tho.

But it would have to be a add on to the G5.

yip,..did not want take a chance then when I bought the G5.
Was not to confident that VW got DSG right.
Three of my friends that bought same time as me with DSG's sold becoz of box issues.

if i was you i would change the chain R715, tensioner - R1140 and bolt - R8.50 from VW

noise is the chain that has stretched lost tension and if it snaps could damage your head. happen to a friend of mines, but he was lucky no damage, as he just took of from a robot and it just switched off and refused to start, we changed the above and started up silent well compared to before i would call it silent

Hi Mr Nawty

Thanks for your input. who changed the chain, did you guys change it yourselves? was it difficult?

Do you exact part numbers for those items?

Thanks once again.

No probs, i will get the part numbers tomorrow for you. in the mean while i suggest not driving the car. he took it to our local mac, cost to change was around R1000, it is fairly difficult well for me i aint no diy guy lol. but it is a job cause you need to strip the entire side to get the chain off and you need special tools to get the tensioner out etc.

I have changed the chain and tensioner on mine. It is quite a mission to do because you need to remove the exhaust camshaft adjuster and to do this you need a special tool called a polydrive or Ribe socket. And even with this tool the head of the bolt on mine stripped, so I had to drill a hole in the head of the bolt and then hammer a spline socket into it. I spoke to Morne and he said it is common for the head of the bolt to strip because it's very tight.

Polydrive / Ribe socket:

Part numbers:

Cam chain tensioner: 06F 109 217 A
Cam chain: 06D 109 229 B
Cam chain tensioner bolts (x3): N 101 963 03
Exhaust camshaft adjuster bolt: 06D 109 281 D
Camshaft adjuster housing seal: 06D 103 121 B
Camshaft adjuster unit: 06F 109 088 J

@ Nawty - thanks for feedback. im a bit of a diy guy, but this is a bit out of my league.

@ Macman - Thanks for the very informative feedback. Really appreciate it. looks like i might only change the chain and tensioner now. did your car go soft once you changed these items only? And by changing the chain and tensioner only, was there any performance difference?

There was no performance difference, but the rattling noise was a bit quieter.

I managed to get a new camshaft adjuster and another new chain and tensioner so I will fit those when I fit the new intake cam.

These cars have very strong engines (TFSi),..no wonder PORSCHE, AUDI and LAMBO use them too. :type:

My take is why would VW make such a potent motor with plastic part prone to fail, I am not complaining coz shore the is sense behind it,..JUST my take on it!

On a higher note,..It is weekend and almost TIME to take GTi out. :troll: :troll:

My intake cam is a Rev.A cam, and the fuel pump lobes are prone to wear especially when the car is modified.

Hi All, new here... and found this topic on search. Yes, my GTI sounds like a diesel.

Quick one, those that used non VW parts here, still running ok?
OEM vs Non OEM?

noise? just changing Tensioner and Chain make a difference in comparison to changing all parts + Cam adjuster?

Just called VW
Chain - R1095
Chain adjuster - R1590
Cam Adjuster - R9k
Bolt - R40
Gasket R90

You don't need the cam adjuster.
We use the goldwagen supplied parts in a lot cars we do. No issue.
And yes I also drive one with them in.
