1.5 JB engine

Post by Lo & Slo_Bunny »

Hi there guys. Yesterday i bought an engine that was advertised as a 1.6L. The engine code is JB and when i checked this morning...JB's are actually 1.5 😠😠😠. My plan was to stroke the engine to build a 1.9(if it was 1.6) but then i dont know what do with this engine. Currently i got a 2l 8v i just installed but my wish was to build a 1.9. Guys is it possible to even put a 1.8 crank and pistons into this stupid engine.

No. That is a previous series motor used in the mk1 from 78 to 81. They have different size main bearings and rods and does not fit the modern stuff. the modern heads also don't fit as they are missing a oil return channel.

I am going to sell it as well. I might as well look for somene willing to swop the JB
engine with a complete 1.8 sub assembly.

Yep, JB's were fitted to Golf GLS's from '78 to '81 locally but were used from '77 to '84 in Golf's, Jetta's, Caddy's and Scirocco's. They are 1457cc in capacity despite the heads having 1.6 markings on them and the engines looking very similar to 1.6's from the same era.

By the sounds of it it seems the JB has more in common with a GY (1.3) than the larger motors.

Not at all. GY has the same crank centre bearing journal and BE pin dimensions as the later motors. IE you can drop any crank from '85 onwards into a GY. (1.3 , 1.6 , 1.8 and even 2l crank)
FR(1.6 gts) and JB(1.5 GLS) was Unique and different from the later engines. The later motors are all easy to distinguish- there is a hump on the front of the cylinderhead that has the bigger oil return. Those all have the same crank pin dimensions.
although the look relatively similar and drops into the same mounts those engines had very much different internal dimensions.

Interesting to read. I drove an FR for many moons and never knew that it was so different from the other, later engines. Never noticed that it doesn't have the oil return casting that the HM does have.

That's good to know.

A mate of mine had an '83 1.6l with the water port between cylinder 1 and 2, the head was badly corroded and blew the head gasket. Anyway a newer head was sourced as replacement, but it didn't fit properly. Now I know more about why.

Thanks Panic.
