high heat gauge velociti - fan kicks in late

Post by araf69 »

Fan only kicks in late around 3/4 but this only happens in traffic. When it kicks in the gauge drops from 3/4 to halfway. Normal citi driving and freeway doesn't go above half on heat gauge.

Advice. 4 pin temp sensor or fan switch.
If I'm correct you don't pick these up on vag

I'd say it is the 4-pin water temp sender. Non-OEM ones tend to over or under-read the temp on the cluster...

Sounds like a switch issue

Another mech advised its good to use a Peugoet (spelling) switch and then your fan kicks in sooner

The gauge reads normal all the time. Just in stand still traffic it picks up to 3/4

I've seen this on my GT, there is a difference between the temperature where the thermostat opens (80 degrees) and the fan kicks in (90 degrees). Normal driving the temperature will be closer to the 80 degree mark but in traffic with no airflow the temps will rise to 90 degrees where the fan will kick in and bring it down again. This only started when I replaced the thermostat with an OEM 80 degree rated unit. The previous GW one was rated higher, closer to the fan temp so less fluctuation between the two temperatures.

Hope it makes sense...

The 4 pin temp sender on the head has nothing to do with the rad fan, that is for ecu and cluster.
Thermostat issue will show up on the freeway too.

My guess is the fan is only activating at the second speed. There is the switch in the rad that controls the fan, the 1st speed should be 89'c and second close to 95'c. the fan activating at the higher temp will explain your probs. replace the switch on the rad and all should be well....

Cit should only have a single speed fan and switch in it.Mk2 and 3 had two speed fans in them.
Normal running temps on the citi is 96deg thats when the fan kicks in on first speed. If it had two speed fan second speed would kick in at 98 deg.
What dash is this car old or new dash.
Old dash did have habbit of over readin specially if non o.e switch used for sensor.Have you connected a vas or vag comm and looked to see what is the engine ecu reading and at waht temp the fan kicks in.

But this isn't good to let the motor get that hot. Please correct me on this, but won't your head start to warp from the heat if it heats to the redline?

Mine has got to 3/4 just twice and only in heavy traffic conditions.once the fan came on at 3/4 it went back to 90. Since I posted this 2 days ago it has never gone past 90 but I haven't driven in traffic since then.

Update on this is that the problem is solved. I will just have to monitor it for next few days. I removed the fan switch (no. 29 spanner) and I noticed rust build up by the switch.when I open the switch I taught water will be rushing out but It didn't. It just dripped out. I have flushed the rust out the radiator and added new coolant and put back the same switch. I idled the car till the fan comes on and it now comes on at 90 C

Great stuff!

Maybe buy some radiator flush and put it in the cooling system for a few hours and go for a long drive with the car. This should free up the rust/limescale buildup in the cooling system. Then basically let the car cool down and let the engine run with one of the water pipes disconnected and put a hosepipe in the radiator so that any loose crap can be circulated out of the cooling system. It seems like your cooling system is in a terrible state. Hope you get it clean buddy! :hi:
