Wanting to buy a Polo 1.6 TDI 2010 - Sisters first car

Post by TastyT »

Hi all,

So this will be a few q's but I need to organize my sister (currently in Matric (Grade 12 / Standard 10 for the older people   ) a car and I know I love my VW so I decided I will source her a nice VW Polo 1.6 TDI as well...

Luckily, we have someone in the family who will be relocating internationally and they (she) are willing to sell their beloved 2010 VW Polo 1.6 TDI (6R) , metallic grey in colour and it has been well looked after - I have driven the car a few times and it is really a gem ( I wouldn't mind buying it myself)

But... here is the questions :

Do these cars last ? lol. I have a 1.4 TSI Comfortline and although I do love her dearly , her heart / family heartline isn't so great . the 1.4TSI tend to give problems , melt pistons etc and I have heard they only last till about 80k km. However, the 1.6 TDI's look like they last forever, especially if they have no mods done or fiddled where it isn't needed . Even the ones with mods last better than my beloved TastyT :(.

So, Do they last?

The car has 198234km on as of 08:36 AM this morning - is that high mileage and will the engine last another 200k km if maintained as per service schedules - we service our cars at reputable vendors / or the manufacturer recommended service station (VW Cape Town or Paarl) as needed.

Also, here is a small summary of what she said has been done - I jotted them down on notepad as I listened to her voicenote - remember, she is a girl and she isn't a car fanatic like me, so forgive her for some info she might have missed - I will be adding this to the thread as they come through : here is my notes from info supplied by her -

XXX

Brakes done (pads) - tyres replaced end of 2017
Big service etc (shocks replaced assume 190000km)
Gearbox links has been replaced/clutch

2010 1.6 TDI Comfortline

Both bottom fogs have been replaced , battery , water pump has been replaced when car was bought , left main headlamp replaced

Otherwise car has been running perfectly and is really well looked after

XXX

She wants about R 120000 - 130000 for the car , I am sure she will come down to between R 110 000 and 120 000 and that is what I would like to know from my fellow forumites - should we buy this or not ?

Sorry for the bad grammatical errors, I have typed this post in a rush and I hope I get good feedback from you guys - please don't tell me :noob: :geek:

Have a lekker day and week, cheers

Things to look out for going forward:

1. Injectors- these cannot be rebuilt or cleaned. Replacement cost is R12,500 each
2. EGR- the valve goes a bit funny after a while due to soot build up and can give lotsa troubles ranging from jerking to no start up. Best is to do EGR delete on the ECU
3. DPF- clogs up, kills power and consumption. Throws out the engines ECU and puts the car into limp mode. DPF flowing makes the world of a difference but obviously will require the DPF to be coded out the ECU.

Honestly and otherwise these cars can stress the hell out of you when issues occur, so I don't recommend it as a first car for a chick.

The price she is asking is a bit steep at that mileage. To give you an idea, a friend with a 2012 Polo 1.6 TDI took his car down to VW to get an evaluation done. He's got 120,000 km on the clock and the car is fully spec'd out- he was offered R115,000 but market related is around R130k-R140k. His car is two years newer and 70,000km fresher- that to me does not equate to a R20k gap on the price being asked but more like R40k-R50k.

The max I think you should pay is ......................................

First car for a lady driver I would recommend if you want to stay in the VW family:
Polo or what ever makes you happy model, BUT a naturally aspirated engine. Look at the 1600cc or 1400cc engines.
The fuel economy is really not that bad on them and they will give you less stress down the line.
Friend here at work's girlfriend has a polo 1400cc. 230 000km on the clock with just the normal wear and tear items replaced so far.
My cars: 2004 Nissan Almera 1.6
1977 Datsun 1200GX
(100% FULLY restored, 13" mags fitted)
Wife's car: 2019 Suzuki Ciaz

+1 to this.
My girlfriend has a 2011 Polo 6R 1.4, engine is a bit of a dog but it's been bulletproof for the past 7 years. Just petrol, servicing, tires and normal wear and tear items. Perfect first car in my opinion!Image

I have driven the 1.6 and 1.4.. Must say, 1.6 impressed me fuel wise and it has nice performance - Will start looking around for 1.6's and maybe a 1.4.. Preferrably 1.6.

Thanks both @jimbo and @HendrikCTI for the advice.
