Polo 1.6 TDi would not start

Post by Vis oom »

Good day

My wife has a 2013 Polo 1.6 TDi. It suddenly decided not to start easily now that it is winter.
I did some checks so far:
1. Battery - O.K.
2. Glow plugs - O.K.
3. Diagnostics - no errors
4. Sent it to an Audi mechanic - now it is really bad.

It took about 10 tries before it started and then a huge amount of smoke was released through the exhaust. It would miss for a while and then be O.K.
Now after the mechanic had it, it was even more difficult to start. A tremendous amount of diesel fumes get released even while driving and the fuel consumption is about 5 times higher than normal.
If I unplug the Diesel temperature sensor, the car would start immediately without any of the smoke. There is a rather noisy engine "knock" but the car would run almost normal.
Some people say that it is the injectors. Can it be?

Please help.

Sounds like he set the timing wrong. They are very very sensitive to injection timing.

The car has 80000 km on the clock.
The tests at Northern Diesel showed that all four injectors are faulty.
VW's price is R12000 each (Siemens 03L130277B).
Any suggestions?

Could be a faulty cam sensor or temp sensor.

I managed to get 4 new injectors from Germany for less than R19000.
They should arrive on 2 August.
I'll keep you posted.

Im not convinced that your injectors is faulty, especially at 80000 km. Dont you still have some sort of warranty from vw ?

This was my thought exactly. Plus the only way I think all four would go at the same time is if bad fuel was used or not changing the fuel filter.

Has the car had any software revisions?

Fisrt post in 2016. Poster has not been active since july 2017. Only ever made 5 posts. Don't think you are geting a reply or feedback.
If you click on his name you will see those stats and can judge how active that person is/was. Some people only come here once, either comes right or don't and then never returns.

The OP doesn't visit the forum regularly, but I see him almost daily, and we chatted quite often about the car.

He thinks the original injectors may not have been faulty, because once the engine would start, it would run normally.
After he had the car with the first mechanic, the injectors were definitely bad. He suspects that the mechanic may actually have swapped the original injectors for bad ones, but couldn't prove anything, because it was a sort-of private, after hours job.
After fitting the new injectors, and coding them to the ECU, the problem was solved.
We still don't quite understand why the engine would only fire after the 5th or 10th time with the original injectors.
Regarding the warranty, this had just expired.

1) In 2016 the warranty hadnt expired and i am sure one of us could have helped him or at least direct him in the right direction.
2) Why did he go to a private mechanic while the car was still under warranty ?

I don't know those answers, Robin, but he must have had his reasons. They are not the first owners of the car, so maybe they got the run-around between the used car dealership and VW. I dunno. From what I gather, it was a frustrating matter from the very start, and it got progressively worse. Seeing that it's closed for him, I can't add any more background here, or do a whole post-mortem.

I just wanted to give closure to the technical question that Rotio had asked above. After installing the new injectors and coding them into the ECU, for reasons we cannot fully understand, all problems including the original starting problem were solved.
