Need Help Figuring out... SOLVED !!! I hope

Post by Legion739 »

I've had my car about 2 months now.

It had GTSR Software on it. (http://www.gtsr.co.za/)

It's using quite a lot of Oil (No leaking at all), It sometimes makes a lot of white smoke but not always.
Car is heavy on fuel, Can't get in under 8l/100km no matter how I drive.

I have huge performance Loss (Car maxed out on a flat peace of road at about 170km/h, no wind late on a cold night)

Today I had the map flashed to Stock Map Since I don't really know the SW the previous owner put on the Car |

They guy said the SW was over fueling quite a bit.
Will test car out tomorrow with stock SW and all to check consumption etc. (Car feels slower now, no moor "big" power boost when you get to 2100rpm)

Anyone in the Area that can help me diagnose the problem ? I DEFINITELY have hardware problems.

I just want to know what the damn Problem/Problems are so that I can have it fixed.

It's driving me nuts. If anyone can help me out or tell me of a shop that can That will be great, want to try and atleast diagnose the problem this weekend.

To me boost leak or over-fueling will cause black smoke most of the time. Since you say white smoke I would say injector issues if the smoke is mostly on idle. White smoke while driving may point to turbo issues

Every now and then It will puff out a lekker white cloud when I stomp the accelerator, Once I got it to pump out white smoke continuously while idling (only happened once) then it just went away (after about 30sec) and haven't seen it happen again.

Where can I take it to see if it's injector issues ? Anyone have a VAG cable that may be able to help ?

What km's are the car on? And what was replaced on it?

White smoke can also be diesel that is leaking past the injectors the best would be to get a VAG cable and check how the value's are adjusting to keep a stable rpm. I think it is block 11 or 14 or something like that. Can just confirm.

Is your timing set correctly?
Is your map and maf clean?
Is the filters on your vacuum control box clean? ( There is 8 small white filters, one on each vacuum line)

White smoke is not always the turbo.
My cambelt broke and after they replaced the head the car started with white smoke and using oil. Service place told me it was the turbo. Because polo tdi's turbo goes and so they defualt to replace turbo after turbo replaced still white smoke. Another service place imeadetly recongnise that it is inside the motor. Rings was gone, they replaced that and no more white smoke.

So white smoke can be 1 of two things. Oil leaking in somewhere(either turbo or in the engine) or diesel leaking by the injectors and this you can check with VAG.

EDIT : Is your car using oil and how much?
Does it struggle to start in the mornings?
If you leave it standing and idle for a long period of time atleast 10min, does it start smoking white?

Ok so since The stock SW was loaded Yesterday I checked my economy today and drove like a granny

Economy is still bad

Average 8.7l/100km (Mostly open road / Highway)

I reset the 2nd meter when I Got op to speed on the Highway

Got a average of 6.4l/100km on a 9.2km long strait Keeping the car @ 120km/h in 6th (was cold outside)

Consumption is still very bad !!
Chuck_Norris wrote:What km's are the car on? And what was replaced on it?
146,000km, Recall turbo was put on @ 60,000km

Chuck_Norris wrote: Is your timing set correctly?

No Idea, Will need to check it, I did get a Maf Senor Error a month ago, (P0101) Cleared the error, never came up again
Chuck_Norris wrote: So white smoke can be 1 of two things. Oil leaking in somewhere(either turbo or in the engine) or diesel leaking by the injectors and this you can check with VAG.
If anyone can give me a suggestion on a good shop or someone I can take it to that would be great.

Yes lots of Oil, Have to put in a Pint of Oil like every 3rd Tank (I always put in 50l per tank).
I start the car 5:20am every morning to go to Gym, It Struggled to start for a while (When it was colder) It does still struggle to start but not as bad as before.
Have Never let it just Idle for 10min before, but will try that when I get a chance. (Have let it idle for 5min after driving, no white smoke)

Yea he has been helping me a lot with advice Etc. , I had the car by him but he got a new laptop so hasn't gotten his cable to work yet (Windows 8.1 Problems)

If you check my Ride Thread you'll see a Dyno run I took it on that just measured KW, (Guys said the dyno is very accurate)
I'll Take it to Dyno Tech some time (people say that's best) since I loaded Stock SW now and all

Sound like you have 2 problems, injectors and somewhere where they oil is leaking.

To solve your win8 problem. Create a Win XP VM and then you can still use the cable on a Win 8 laptop

Can be as small as a leaking injector seal as well.
Cost is R170 per set and you always replace for all injectors

What ever it is I've got Big performance Loss

Car maxed out on a flat peace of road at about 170km/h, no wind late on a cold night (This was before It was flashed to Stock Map)
will test top speed again when I get the chance.

Why max it out on a flat piece of road ?? You know there is something wrong with the car.You did a dyno run and it is way of were it should be.

So take it to someone that knows what they are doing and get it fixed.

Yea so they say it's definitely the Turbo :( , I'm going to make a plan to take her in on Monday so they can take the turbo off and check the damage etc. and then we can make a plan from there with Motorplan etc. (My warranty covers a max of R4500 on the turbo)

So what you guys think is my best option from here ?

Get new Turbo ?
Rebuild old Turbo if possible ?
Get bigger Turbo ?

Best bet will be to buy new. Refurbs on these won't last. Otherwise do a hybrid on the current one. BT is a mission.

I don't know about the Cape but over here sportline turbos are cheap. R5500 cheap.

What is needed for a BT ? I know FMIC is needed

Sean Said I can buy his old turbo for cheap (he is doing BT upgrade) don't know how long a 2nd hand turbo will last, but I can always claim from motor-plan again if it pops in less than 2 years

Firstly, you need to source the BT which is half the issue. Then you have to make sure it is vacuum actuated instead of electronic. If it is electronic you have to have it converted.
The you need to cut your old turbo off the existing mani and either have a flange made for the turbo and mani pairing or else have the turbo welded to the mani. Then you also need custom software and definitely an FMIC. Don't forget lots of time, money and patience. :)

If it were me I would take Seans turbo since I don't know how cheap you can source a SL turbo in the Cape. Also, Sean is a pretty trustworthy dude so I am sure that turbo is in decent nick! Just don't know how you'll get that one round your maintenance plan you have going
