Brilliant Black Audi S3 detailed

Post by mikhail117 »

A shorter write up from me this time due to less photos, the next car in for a shave was a black 8P S3.
As a car I’ve always had an affinity to, I was really looking forward to this detail. Despite being half the age of the X5, this car was really in a bad state. Swirls, RIDS, and spots where the clear has been struck through, my goal was to make as much of a change while abrading as little paint away as possible.

Even though I had inspected the car before, when it was dropped off my jaw fell all over again. The previous owner(s) clearly showed the car no love, or maybe even too much love without the proper methods and this was the result:
Pictures on arrival:

Some serious RIDS:

First up, the powerhouse. The underside of the bonnet had quite a bit of dirt and somewhat disproportionately, the engine bay wasn’t bad at all. Light dusting and leaves were all that I had to clean. The underside of the bonnet was given a high pressure wash before being sprayed with APC and being cleaned with various hog hair brushes. The bay itself was cleaned with APC too before the metal was polished with Auto Finesse triple. Plastics were cleaned using APC and then dressed with Auto Finesse dressle.

Process:
Under Bonnet: HP Rinse | Paint cleaned with Cyclo CM30 @ 1:5 | Polished using Auto Finesse Tripple on a MF hand applicator pad
Engine Bay: Light rinse | Clean with Cyclo CM30 @5:1 using various brushes | Light Rinse | Dried with MF towels and air | Dressed using Auto Finnesse Dressle

Moving onto the wheels, arches were cleaned first using APC after a HP rinse. They were later dressed using Shield Sheen. Tyres were hit with Meguiar’s All wheel and tire twice before later receiving two coats of Gyeon Tyre.
Wheels received a HP rinse before being cleaned with ValetPro Bilberry Wheel cleaner which was sprayed onto the wheel before being topped with APC at 1:5 to increase the dwell time. Dirt was agitated with various wheel brushes before being rinsed off with a HP washer.
Wheels were then dried before being decontaminated using Gyeon Tar then ValetPro Dragon’s Breathe. The faces were then clayed using Car Pro medium grade clay. Wheels were later dressed with Menzerna Powerlock.

Process:
Arches: HP rinse | Cyclo CM30 @5:1 which was agitated using a Mothers Fender well brush | HP Rinse
Tyres: HP rinse | Meguiar’s All Wheel and Tire left to dwell then agitated with a Mothers tyre brush | HP rinse | Dressed (later) with Gyeon Tire
Wheels: HP rinse | ValetPro Bilberry Wheel Cleaner @ 1:5 | Cyclo CM30 @5:1| agitated using Wheel Woolies and other brushes | HP rinse | Dry | Gyeon Tar | HP rinse | Dry | ValetPro Dragon’s Breath | HP rinse | flood rinse | Clay using ONR as lube | Sealed (later) with Menzerna Powerlock

Next up was the exhausts. Before VAG had their chrome plated obsession their tips were stainless steel and this allows them to be resurrected from any state. They were cleaned using APC and hog hair brushes before the caked on soot was removed using superfine steel wool. They were then polished using Meguiar’s NXT metal polish

Process:
Cleaning: Rinse | Cyclo CM30 @5:1 and hog hair brushes | Rinse | Cleaned using #0000 grade steel wool | Polished using Meguiar’s NXT metal polish

Onto the wash, the car was rinsed before it was given a snow foam and 2 bucket wash. The vehicle was then dried using microfiber drying towels and ONR. Decon was then carried out using Gyeon Tar, Gyeon Iron and a Clay cloth.

Process:
Wash: HP Rinse | Pre-Foam using ValetPro ANSF | Panel Gaps, emblems, petrol flap and door jambs brushed using ValetPro Detailing brush | HP Rinse | 2 Bucket wash using Gyeon Bathe and Gyeon Smoothie mitt with 2 grit guards per bucket | HP Rinse | Dried using various drying towels and ONR
Decontamination: Gyeon Tar| Wiped off using MF towels | Gyeon Iron | HP Rinse | Flood rinse | Clayed using Car Pro Fine clay and ONR | HP Rinse | Dried using various drying towels and ONR

Paint levels were then checked and the roof averaged around 90 microns with the two clear areas where the clear coat was struck through was at 63 microns and 55 microns respectively. They were given a light polish by hand to neaten them up before applying a coating over the area to give it some protection going foreward. The rest of the car averaged at around 104 microns and along with the rest of the roof was polished using Rupes blue pads and Rupes Zephir before refining with Rupes yellow pads and Scholl’s S30.

Last up were the protection, interior and odds and ends. Paint was protected with 2 layers of Menzerna Powerlock, exterior plastic and rubber cleaned with Sheild Rubber and vinyl cleaner before being sealed with Aerospace 303 protectant. Glass was cleaned using Chemical Guys Miracle glass cleaner and the windshield was coated using Soft99 Glaco Quick Type.

Process:

Paint Protection: Paint cleansed with Gyeon Prep | Menzerna Powerlock, 2 coats
Exterior trim: Cleaned with Shield SP9 | Dressed with Aerospace 303
Glass: Cleaned with Chemical Guys Miracle glass cleaner | Coated with Soft99 Glaco
Rubbers: Cleaned with Shield heavy duty Rubber and Vinyl Cleaner | Protected with Aerospace 303

Man, I do love seeing transformations like these.
Especially on black cars, more so those I desire, and an S3 is definitely one of those.

Epic work
