Uhm a coil is pretty simple. One side is + form the ignition and the otherside is - from either the tp100 or the points depending on how old the mk1 is.

Its an 85 gti so has a TCI unit.

My coil has 2 wires going to each side of it.

Not all coil wire colour codes are the same either.

So this might be simple to you but without wiring diagram or pic, a noob like me will struggle a bit.

I think we need an electrics section>Dont you think?

Ok the 2 wires on the + side is a power from the ignition and the other goes to the tci to power it.
On the negative there is a green wire which is the signal form the tci and the othr is a red with black trace which goes to the cluster and is the rev countr signal.

Thanks. Will the car start up if the coil wires are swapped around?

It might but the spark will be weak. Just check it they are usually clearly marked and the black wires must be on the side marked +

Mate of mine had a problem where his motor sounded like it wanted to start but didn't, we suspected fuel but it turned out the TP100 was causing weak spark, swapped in a new one - problem sorted.
Current rides:

VW Golf - 83 GT 2.1 16V 2-door with throttles
VW Golf - 78 LS 2.0 8V 4-door (2.1 ABF with throttles in progress)
VW Golf - '08 Citi Storm - 1.4 for now
Hyundai - 1.4 Getz (daily)

Hi...

If you still having issues, go to Goldwagen and buy an ignition harness/loom for R79. Plug it to distributor, module and coil.

Thereafter test with test light and see which existing wire on car has power when you put key, that wire goes on positive of coil.

I did that last week on my car. Started on the turn.
