Can someone tell me if it's possible to use steering wheel buttons from a MK5 GTI steering wheel
in a 2006 Polo 9n3 GTI?

Probably possible with a VW radio that supports the functionality of volume etc.

Ok let's keep this simple.
How would I do it with a stock radio?

Re: Polo 9n3 retrofit MK5 GTI Steering Wheel Buttons?
i would think they need to be matched...not forgetting the special connectors and cables etc...
the buttons would be like a remote functionality..either by cable or BT...
worst case it work via the vehicle internal comms bus...then forget it.
bru you got the steering and not the deck as well...
very good one this...gonna have me thinking hard about it...

I've never seen any polo 9n3 with multifunction steering from factory so wonder if it will be even possible.
I think this might do it

I think the hard bit would be the wiring from the steering wheel to the HU, since the 9N3 never camed with steering wheel controls.
You could look at the harness from an Ibiza Cupra though, which did have the option of steering wheel controls, shouldn't be hard to retrofit since they're the same underneath...

Shapes seem close enough

Re: Polo 9n3 retrofit MK5 GTI Steering Wheel Buttons?
Thanks that's very helpful to know.
I'm considering buying this head unit
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/301497401150 ... EBIDX%3AIT
So I'm going to send a message to the company selling the harness I linked earlier and see if they can make an adaptor for it.
FYI this head unit here has an option to program steering wheel keys so as long as I can get a harness connected to it, it should work...

Yup most decent aftermarket radios have steering wheel compatibility. On VW radios you havta figure out pin outs.Stompie wrote:with an aftermarket radio?Killerwatt wrote:Its possible. But a fair bit of diy will be required...

Even if the polo did not come with Multi function steering you could probably use the slip ring from a MK4 with multifunction and adapt your harness to work.
That aftermarket radio will not be a direct fit in a 9n3 only 6r.

Heard slip rings mentioned a lot dont know what they are.
I already have a double row aftermarket stereo so i think the aftermarket unit should fit

Hi Fatjoez,
Did you come right with the steering controls for your Polo 9n3? I thinking about doing the same.
Currently using an Android double din headunit from StopShop, so the deck has the functionality but have no idea where to get started with steering controls.

Re: Polo 9n3 retrofit MK5 GTI Steering Wheel Buttons?
Hey pal
Sold the wheel as I'm changing to an R32 possibly.
I think it is possible to get it working and since you have an android unit I know there were adapter kits as well to make them work with the steering wheel controls.
It's worth a try in your position.
Perhaps will require some coding with VCDS or similar
