Nakamichi NA1650 opinions

Post by 2226cc »

I'm not an audio person, but I'm going to be stuck with the citi 1.4 for many years to come. So I'm on a mini-mission to get some better listening in it.

I will be using the stock head unit for the time being, but I do intend putting in a aftermarket unit in the next year.
The one that's caught my eye is the Nakamichi NA1650.
Clean looks (a lot of these head units today are horribly gawdy, imho), has the outputs I want and has more features than I could possibly need.

Anyone have experience with this unit?

I haven't been watching the car audio world for well over a decade. Back in the day Nakamichi had some of the best sounding units you could get. Did they cheap out at some point or is the NA1650 well built and decent sounding?

I've read that the NA780 is pretty shoddy build quality, but then it is half the price.

Very good question. I would love one of the old Nakamichi units but with today's features. They were awesome decks.

No idea about today's quality, but at the price, I don't think they would sound anywhere near as good as a high end unit or even come close to what they used to be.

The thing is R3.5k. Not exactly budget, but then I don't understand how people are paying R20k for head unit these days. That NA780 is cheap though and I suspect you get what you pay for there. Just curious as to how the NA1650 holds up to a 3.5K "regular" brand. It's a media centre including time alignment functions, etc.

I should actually just open up the closet in the study and dig out the Sony head unit I bought some 12 years ago. Unused. Back when Sony was still decent. From the days before mp3. :) Bought it for my Audi.

Nakamichi SA offered at R3800.
Sounds Limited offering at R3899:

http://www.soundslimited.co.za/index.ph ... 9c147fda42

But, I've now spent a lot of time online looking at this thing and others and realised they're all the same thing really. They use 2 boards, one running windows CE6.0 to do the nav stuff. The other board might be running an archaic version of android or other OS. Decided might as well just get a Gemsound DVD-803 for R1.8k and wait for the new trend of android head units to become more popular and better.

The newer models showing up have capacitive touch screens rather than the resistive that the current models have. CPU in the current head units look to be just 500-800Mhz compared to dual and even quad core 1.6Ghz. Who knew we'd get to a point of worrying about our radios speed. Image

Looks to be the same as the NA2650 but with 7" display. Looks to be a 6k-10k unit.

They do make very clean looking units. I prefer volume knobs and their's is not OTT like other brands. Pity about availability.

I've emailed them to enquire about the cost for the NA2750 and the additional GPS kit

Max I would want to pay is around the R5000 price bracket

I have a feeling that budget might be a little low. But post up the price when you get it.

I saw on Sounds Unlimited that the NA2650 was retailing for R4499 so I can't imagine the NA2750 to cost significantly more than that

I also like the idea of the screen mirror as I can use Google maps and mirror that onto the head unit

Doesn't that need the mirrorlink device?
Don't see it on SU. Nakamichi said NLA.

Ever considered a pure android device?

Check out eBay and aliexpress.

Also, soundlouder.co.za do all those Chinese head units with GPS, but just looked too expensive really. You expect a premium price for a brand name, but now you see those prices for something unknown.

I know the app will work as it connects to the radio via Bluetooth. Probably need a charging cable too.

I can't find info on what size phones will pop in there. Might be worthwhile popping down to audio store to see it in the flesh.

I've got a JVC KW-NSX1 which does all this. Works really well. Only a few months old, I might just sell it as the daily I'm looking at only takes a single din, which is a pity.

I went for this unit because it allows you to navigate using Mirror link on your phone and listen to normal radio which the others don't do. If you use the Nav, then you have to use the phone for everything.

Yeah, that's the thing that seemed stupid to me about using win CE board for the nav. It's separate from the main unit.

What kinda money you had in mind for the JVC?
