And now I'm changing the whole braking system completely, so the delay was actually pointless.

Send me a pic of the Vagon's roof centre console when you get a gap, I have some Mk4 bits that might be a nice upgrade if your car doesn't already have them.

Yeah, for now just want to get the car running and cleaned up nicely so that I can use it as a daily. The Merc can then stand for a bit.

Long term will probably just see a set of wheels and coilies. I want to get a G4 GTI steering wheel as well as some point.

There are a few other things that I will do in time, but nothing hectic.

Can anyone tell me what the safest way will be to clean the engine bay? Someone mentioned to me that I must use parafien and a pain brush and once everything is done, just spray it off with a high pressure hose. Any ideas please?

Nice addition to the family. Interested to follow this.

I was also looking for a vagon, preferably TDI, but when my brother sold his hatchback, I jumped at the opportunity, because I always prefer a car with a more-or-less known history.

I have used the paraffin/brush/pressure-rinse method for engine cleaning for many years, but I'm not sure what the detailing fraternity thinks of it.

Thanks bud. Yeah me too. I was going to buy a TDi before I bought my A4 wagon a few years ago, so when this one came up now i jumped at it. Dont mind the 1.6 TBH.

Awesome, as long as it works then ill do that. Just wanted to make sure that its a good idea to do this. Ill obviously tape all the wires and pipes closed etc.

Finally started with the wagon this morning. Taped all the connectors up, and put the starter motor in a plastic bag to stop water from getting to it.

Attacked the engine bay with degreaser and then climed in with the Karcher. BEEEEEG difference!

Got quite abit done today. Me and Grant started at 10:00 and we only finished at about 17:00.

Heres what we did:

Removed the bumper, grill and the cradle
We then wanted to mount the engine on the engine stand so that we can work on it, but needed to remove the flywheel and clutch in order for us to mount it to the stand. When we did that, we saw that the bolts we had was too short, so we had to go find longer bolts at Builders.

Once the motor was mounted we could start replacing parts from the other motor that was different to the new motor

While Grant was busy replacing the plugs and doing a few other things, I was on washing duty and cleaned the sump, air box, tappet cover, then the cover under the tappet cover, oil pickup, and a few other things. Degreaser works well. Pity i couldnt use the Karcher today as we couldn’t get outside the workshop coz the alarm was in in the yard.

We then refitted the sump, and had to replace the main crank seal cover thing as the one that was on the motor was broken.

Then, when we wanted to fit the manifold, Grant saw that the top studs were too short, so he started removing the ones off the other motor.

Wont be doing much in the next 2 weeks as we are leaving for Thailand on Thursday. Once we back, we will try and finish the car on a Saturday.

Rion covered the basics, ill add a few pics I took

Below you can see the differences between the old and the new motor, there are quite a few differences. The big ones i could pick up thus far was the old motor has an electronic thermostat, DBW throttle body and EGR system, all of which needs to be moved over.

The old motor was stripped so much by the previous owners that we spent half the morning just trying to make sense of it all.

Image

Image

When i flipped the motor around I found the crank seal housing was broken, so replaced it with one from the old motor

Image

Image

When i tried to fit the exhaust mani i found the top studs were to short because of the EGR system, you can see the difference between the stud lengths.

I broke one and called it a day, so will have to figure out how to get that out when we go back
